Friend or Foe?

Something about this one made me keep my distance as I walked through the Victoria Butterfly Gardens.

It was huge compared to everything else around it. Its sheer size caught my attention.

Then I looked a little closer.

Wait. Are those two snake heads?

It turns out I was looking at an Atlas moth, one of the largest moths in the world. Those strange tips on its wings resemble the heads of cobras and are believed to help protect it from predators.

It certainly looked intimidating to me.

But then I learned something I wasn't expecting.

This giant moth is harmless to us. It doesn't bite. It doesn't sting. It has no venom.

And once it emerges as an adult, it doesn't even feed. It survives on energy stored from its time as a caterpillar.

Its entire adult life may last only one or two weeks.

All that size. Those threatening snake-like wings. And such a remarkably short time to live.

Maybe this gentle giant is nature's way of reminding us to not judge a book — or a moth in this case — by its cover.
